Windows default font manger is terrible, especially in XP. NexusFont is free and has all the features as designer could need for dealing with large font libraries.

What can it do?

With NexusFont, you can view fonts that are installed on your pc, compare fonts, install fonts and uninstall fonts. You can enter your own custom font previews which is very useful for select the best font for a logo. It also gives you the ability to group your favorite fonts for quick reference.
